Karenni Camps

There are approximately 23,000 Karenni¹ living in two camps near the town of Mae Hong Son, Thailand.

 

Site 1 (Ban Mai Nai Soi / Ban Tractor)

The largest Karenni camp is located near Nai Soi (approx. 45min. drive from Mae Hong Son). It was formed in 1996 when three Karenni camps merged. Since 1996, the population of this camp has increased from less than 2,000 to almost 20,000.

Located ~2km from the border, this camp is vulnerable and has come under attack from Burmese troops.

 

Site 2 (Ban Mae Surin)

Site 2 is very isolated in comparison to Site 1. It has a population of a little under 4,000.
